Preventing unplanned downtime in industrial processes only gets more important during times of high demand. The cost of gearbox, motor and drive shaft replacement often pales in comparison to that of the lost production resulting from mechanical torque overload failures caused by jams, collisions and binding in the driveline. This makes mechanical circuit breaking technology more important than ever since a fast, tool free reset and recovery from torque overload minimizes interruption.
R+W STE series compact inline safety couplings (torque limiters) offer an excellent means of protecting driveline components from overload. The adjustable and easy to reset ball-detent mechanism provides a fast and accurate overload safety disconnect of the driveline in case of a sudden increase in torque load. Once the machine has been cleared, the ball-detent plungers simply need to be pushed back into engagement with a pry bar or dead blow hammer before being ready to run again. A single disengagement normally pays for the unit many times over. Their compact size and configurability drastically increase the chances that they can be used to replace standard couplings in existing installations.
The elastomer inserts in the coupling compensate for minor shaft misalignments in addition to absorbing vibration, providing further protection from everyday wear and tear. Various shaft attachment options are also available, including simple keyway connections, frictional locking devices, splines, flanges and more. Given a few days to configure the design, R+W can adapt its full range of modular ball detent torque limiters to just about any application, speed or torque capacity.
