Precision line shaft couplings are well known for providing smooth stable running over longer distances between shaft ends. Cut to length with fully split clamping hubs for easy drop-in lateral installation, and with reduced hardware requirements, their simplicity can be hard to resist.
Screw jack lift systems and tandem belt drive actuators in multi-axis motion systems are the top applications for line shaft couplings since they save considerable cost in both cases. Product selection begins with a torque rating, followed by weighing the rotational speed and overall coupling length requirements. Critical (maximum) speed is a function of the length of a line shaft of a certain size and can be easily calculated by your technical sales contacts at R+W. When line shaft couplings are sizing up to a maximum speed lower than what applications require, typical next steps include looking at larger sizes with a greater tube stiffness and considering changing from standard aluminum tubing to carbon fiber to reduce weight. A new solution from R+W goes a step further.
The new EZ2-S style features a traditional precision preloaded flexible jaw coupling at one end and a rigid shaft clamp at the other end. Designed to be used in pairs, the two line shafts connect with the rigid ends in the center, clamped to a stub shaft and bearing block assembly provided by R+W. The bearing block includes a single angular contact bearing, which allows the stub shaft to pivot and assist in compensating for misalignment between driven components without compromising performance. The all-in-one sourcing of these kits helps to ensure proper sizing and procurement of components that are manufacturer approved for use. Most importantly, it effectively doubles the length a given line shaft can span with a single easy to use kit.
